Psychology from a Balinese Cultural Perspective and the Impact of Climate Change Seminar with the University of Adelaide.


The Undergraduate Psychology Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, and The University of Adelaide hosted a two-day seminar on "Psychology from a Balinese Perspective and the Impact of Climate Change on Mental Health" on July 14 and 15, 2025, in the Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah Room, Faculty of Medicine Building, Denpasar Campus. This event was part of a two-week comparative study by students and lecturers from The University of Adelaide in Bali and Java. (July 14, 2025)


This comparative study was designed to provide students with a meaningful experience in a multicultural approach to psychology, allowing them to explore how cultural values and practices shape mental health and well-being. The seminar also addressed the topic of climate change, aiming to raise awareness of the relationship between climate change and mental health, as environmental challenges impact communities differently around the world.


The seminar was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. dr. Komang Januartha Putra Pinatih, M.Kes., welcomed the collaboration between the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Adelaide and the Undergraduate Psychology Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University. In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Udayana University also expressed his hope that more collaborations would be established with the University of Adelaide.


The first day of the seminar featured speakers from the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, Luh Made Karisma Sukmayanti Suarya, S.Psi., M.A., and Putu Nugrahaeni Widiasavitri, S.Psi., M.Psi., on the topic of "Psychology and Balinese Women," and Prof. Deborah Turnbull, a lecturer from the University of Adelaide, on Cross-cultural Communication. The second day's speakers were Komang Rahayu Indrawari, S.Psi., M.Psi., from the Undergraduate Psychology Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, and Dr. Chevaun Haseldine and Dr. Natasha van Antwerpen, representatives of the University of Adelaide, on the topic of "Climate Change."


In addition to this seminar, over the next three days, students from the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University's Undergraduate Psychology Program will also accompany students and lecturers from the University of Adelaide to visit several historical sites, such as Pura Kebo Edan, a purification ceremony at Tirta Empul, and several other locations, introducing Balinese culture and exploring other traditional sites.


Through academic sessions, cultural exchanges, and field trips, participants will gain a deeper understanding of global psychological perspectives and develop a greater sense of social and environmental responsibility.
