Young Doctors of FK Unud Achieve Global Recognition with Publication in Journal of Endovascular Therapy

Bryan Gervais de Liyis (Doctor of Medicine 2019), dr. Anastasya Maria Kosasih (Doctor of Medicine 2016), and dr. Gusti Ngurah Prana Jagannatha (Doctor of Medicine 2016) successfully published their research in reputable international journals. Journal of Endovascular Therapy is the official journal of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists (ISEVS) which has been indexed by Scopus Q1 since 1999. The FK Unud team was guided by Dr. Made Satria Yudha Dewangga, M.Biomed, Sp.JP (K), FIHA, FAsCC as a supervisor who continues to provide input and support. This achievement is a testament to their hard work to continue to present new discoveries in the endovascular field on the international stage.

The optimal approach to closure of the ostium secundum atrial septal defect in children remains uncertain. This study aimed to assess the complications and effectiveness of surgical and transcatheter closure. This study provides important insights for clinicians facing the optimal approach to closure of pediatric atrial ostium secundum septal defect. The higher incidence rate of cardiac arrhythmias, pericardial effusion, and pulmonary complications in surgical closure emphasizes the challenges associated with this modality. In contrast, transcatheter closure, with comparable effectiveness and shorter hospital stays, is emerging as an attractive and less invasive alternative. These findings provide clinicians with evidence to make informed decisions, optimizing patient outcomes. Subgroup analysis emphasizes tailored considerations for European pediatric patients, larger ASDs (> 15 mm), and patients younger than 8 years old.

This success affirms the commitment of cardiovascular enthusiasts, while strengthening Udayana University's reputation as an educational institution that stands out in promoting research and innovation in medicine. Their contributions not only have a major impact on improving the understanding and management of pediatric heart disease globally, but are also a true testament to Bali's spirit of expanding the boundaries of medical science on the international stage. This success is not only a source of pride for the research team, but also cements Indonesia's position as a key player in endovascular research on a global level.
