Commemorating World AIDS Day, FK Unud Holds Seminar and Workshop with the Theme HIV in MSM Adolescent and Young Adult in Bali
The Pediatric Health Specialist Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University and the AIDS Care Student Group (KMPA) held a seminar and workshop on the dissemination of the results of Udayana University's international grant research INSPIRE entitled: HIV in MSM adolescent and young adult in Bali right on the momentum of World AIDS Day, Sunday, December 1, 2024.
This activity invited stakeholders from the Health Office and Education Office of Bali Province, Denpasar City, and Badung Regency. The invitation to participants was also attended by teachers and high school and vocational school students in Denpasar City and Badung Regency.
Led by Dr. dr. Partha Muliawan, M.Sc., this seminar activity involved 3 speakers who have a wealth of experience in research around HIV, namely:
1. Dr. dr. Ketut Dewi Kumara Wati, Sp. A(K)
2. dr. Made Oka Negara, M.Biomed, FIAS
3. dr. Luh Putu Lila Wulandari, MPH, PhD
This activity was opened by the Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Information of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, Prof. dr. I Md. Ady Wirawan, MPH., Ph.D. He welcomed the holding of the seminar and workshop by the INSPIRE Research Team from the Pediatric Health Specialist Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University. This activity is a form of breakthrough or scientific breakthrough that seeks to implement research findings. This is an example of how Higher Education can play a role in community development and also an example that research must be translated into real action.
Chair of the 2024 World AIDS Day Seminar and Workshop Committee, Dr. dr. Ketut Dewi Kumara Wati, Sp.A(K), in her speech revealed that this workshop was also a forum for disseminating research results by the INSPIRE Research Team on "HIV in adolescents and young adults in Bali," she hopes that this workshop seminar can enrich the understanding of students, teachers and stakeholders and become an encouragement for real action in preventing HIV transmission, caring for PLWHA with empathy, and eliminating the stigma that hinders effective treatment.
A similar thing was also expressed by Doctor I Made Oka Negara, S.Ked, M.Biomed, FIAS who said that among this population, HIV transmission is related to risky sexual behavior, including variations in sexual partners (permanent, casual, and commercial), to male-to-male sex relations (MSM) being the dominant factor. Integrated biological and behavioral survey data (STBP) shows that this behavior is exacerbated by the lack of access to information and sexual health education, especially among school youth and informal sector workers. Meanwhile, dr. Luh Putu Lila Wulandari, MPH, PhD, emphasized more on preventive measures to prevent HIV transmission for adolescents or young adults who have not been exposed to HIV with Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).
The seminar was followed by a focus group discussion (FGD) by students and stakeholders facilitated by experts in the field of HIV. The participants discussed several things such as the curriculum/module/topic of reproductive health in schools, their opinions on research on sexually transmitted diseases conducted on high school adolescents, the integration of HIV education values in the school curriculum, and AIDS campaigns in schools. The results of the discussion were presented in a plenary meeting as well as closing the workshop activities that afternoon.
