Agus Sueta earned a doctorate degree after discovering the effectiveness of vitamin B6 in preventing post-surgery complications.
Located in the Lt III Postgraduate meeting room, a Doctoral Promotion exam was taking place with promovendus candidate dr. Made Agus Dwianthara Sueta, Sp.B-KBD with the dissertation title "Vitamin B-6 Reduces Nitric Oxide Levels, Interleukin 6, Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1 in the Small Intestine and Reduces Post Laparotomy Intraperitoneal Adhesions in Wistar Rats".
Intraperitoneal adhesions occur in approximately 95% of cases after laparotomy which is still a problem for surgeons and high public health costs. The process of intraperitoneal adhesion formation involves inflammatory mediators, hemostatic fibrinolysis, and oxidative stress reactions, all of which work together to restore tissue integrity.
Vitamin B6 has effects: inhibition of NO and NOS, suppression of IL-6 production, and decreases fibrinolytic capacity. This study proves that intramuscular administration of Vitamin B6 reduces levels of NO, IL-6, PAI-1 and the incidence of intraperitoneal adhesions.
The novelty from this research is that Vitamin B-6 inhibits iNOS and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) which are induced by lipopolysaccharide by suppressing the activation of NF-κB, a pro-inflammatory transcription factor.
Pyridoxine suppresses cytokine gene expression in macrophages by inhibiting TAK1-mediated Toll-like receptor (TLR) phosphorylation, which inhibits the NF-κB and JNK pathways, thereby suppressing interlukin production and increasing intestinal motility which has a positive effect on preventing intraperitoneal adhesions.
Intramuscular administration of vitamin B6 can be recommended for phase 1 to phase 3 clinical trials so that it can be applied to humans to prevent intraperitoneal adhesions with the potential to reduce free radicals, inflammation, and trigger fibrinolysis.
