Clinical Microbiology Specialist Program at FK Unud Partners with Okayama University to Strengthen Genomic and AMR Research

The Clinical Microbiology Specialist Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (FK Unud), successfully hosted a Guest Lecture and Workshop on Cutting-Edge Genomic Examination and Analysis in Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). This scientific event took place at the Prof. Dr. I Goesti Ngoerah Gde Ngoerah Meeting Room, FK Unud Building, Denpasar, on Monday, September 7, 2026.

The event featured international expert Kazuyoshi Goto, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Health Sciences at Okayama University, Japan. In his presentation titled "Translating Genomics into Action: Modern Molecular Tools to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance," he shared his knowledge and clinical experience regarding the crucial role of genomic technology in mapping and addressing antimicrobial resistance. The interactive session was moderated by Dr. dr. Made Agus Hendrayana, S.Ked., M.Ked.

The event began with a report from the Organizing Committee Chair, Prof. dr. Ni Nengah Dwi Fatmawati, S.Ked., Sp.MK.(K), Ph.D., followed by official remarks and the opening of the event by the Dean of FK Unud, Prof. Dr. dr. I Gede Eka Wiratnaya, Sp.OT(K).

In his address, Prof. Eka Wiratnaya stated that this scientific collaboration with Okayama University represents a tangible implementation of FK Unud's commitment to strengthening global networks and international exposure. This initiative also aligns with plans to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to expand future collaboration within the framework of the "Tri Dharma" (Three Pillars) of Higher Education. Furthermore, the Dean highlighted the strategic relevance of this activity in relation to the cutting-edge research facilities currently possessed by the faculty. “The Faculty of Medicine at Udayana University (FK Unud) now possesses a Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) facility at its Integrated Biomedical Laboratory (LBT), established through a collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Health. The presence of expert speakers is expected to optimize the utilization of this facility—regarding both machine operations and the analysis of complex genomic data—in the fight against infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR),” emphasized Prof. Eka.

The event was also attended by the Coordinator of the Clinical Microbiology Specialist Study Program at FK Unud, Dr. dr. Ni Made Adi Tarini, S.Ked., Sp.MK(K); faculty members from the department; and all residents enrolled in the Clinical Microbiology Specialist Training Program at FK Unud.
