Doctor of Medical Sciences Proves the Potential of Purple Sweet Potato Extract in Anhedonia Therapy

Located in the Postgraduate Hall room, Lt. III Postgraduate Building, Udayana University, a Doctoral Promotion examination was held with the promovenda candidate, dr. Ida Aju Kusuma Wardani, Sp.KJ., MARS, with the dissertation title "The Effect of Purple Sweet Potato Tuber Extract (Ipomoea batatas L) on Increasing BDNF Levels, Decreasing Malondialdehyde, Increasing Serotonin and Decreasing Interleukin-1b in Wistar Rats with Anhedonia Behavior." (14/8/2024)

Anhedonia is the main symptom of depression characterized by the inability to feel pleasure. Depression is caused by many factors, one of which is oxidative stress. Purple sweet potato tubers (Ipomoea batatas L) contain flavonoids as antioxidants that are thought to have the potential to improve anhedonia conditions. The aim was to evaluate the effect of purple sweet potato tuber extract on BDNF, malondialdehyde (MDA), serotonin, and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) levels in Wistar rats with anhedonia behavior. Experimental study with pre-test post-test control group design using 16 male Wistar rats induced anhedonia. The rats were divided into control and treatment groups (n=8/group).

The treatment group was given purple sweet potato tuber extract at a dose of 1g/kgBB/day for 7 days every morning. BDNF, MDA, serotonin, and IL-1β levels were measured before and after treatment. The treatment group showed a significant increase in BDNF (p< 0.001) and serotonin (p< 0.001) levels, and a significant decrease in MDA levels (p< 0.001) compared to the control group. However, there was a significant increase in IL-1β levels in the treatment group (p< 0.001). Purple sweet potato tuber extract has the potential to improve anhedonia through an increase in BDNF and serotonin, and a decrease in oxidative stress. However, there is no evidence of a decrease in IL-1β so further research is needed regarding its immunomodulatory effects.
