Doctor of Medicine Proves the Role of Adipose Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Nerve Regeneration

Located in Dr. A A. Made Djelantik, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University Building, Denpasar, a Doctoral Promotion exam was held with the promotion candidate, dr. Anak Agung Gde Yuda Asmara, Sp.OT(K) End-To-Side of End-To-End in Ischiadicus Nerve Injury in Sprague-Dawley Rats” (5/6/2023)

Peripheral nerve injuries are still one of the most common cases, and often lead to significant disability if optimal treatment is not received. So far, the end-to-side neuroraphy technique has been quite successful in overcoming the weaknesses of the end-to-end neuroraphy technique, which has become the gold standard in the management of nerve injuries. Along with the development of regenerative therapy as a very promising reparative agent for various types of tissue, researchers have proven the role of Adipose Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in nerve regeneration.

This research is an experimental study on animals with a randomized post test only control group design. The conclusion of this study shows that the administration of Adipose Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells can increase the regeneration and repair of nerves that are repaired with end-to-side neuroraphy techniques. This was marked by an increase in the expression of S-100 protein, NGF, IGF, nerve fiber diameter, and significant improvement in motor function was achieved.

The novelty of this research is in overcoming the weaknesses of end-to-end neuroraphy techniques in the treatment of nerve injuries, administration of Adipose Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in end-to-side neuroraphy techniques offers very promising results in regenerating injured nerves and improving motor function.
