FK Unud Surgical Specialist Study Program Provides Health Counseling and Services in Tumbu Village Karangasem
The Surgical Specialist Study Program of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University held a Social Service for Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer, Breast Cancer and Varicose Veins in commemoration of the 34th Anniversary of the Surgical Specialist Study Program on Saturday, May 10, 2025 which took place in Tumbu Village, Karangasem Regency.
Activities carried out in the form of health counseling, breast ultrasound and vascular ultrasound. This activity was carried out as a form of application of the Tridharma of Higher Education, namely community service as well as promotive and preventive efforts in increasing awareness of the importance of health.
The event was opened with remarks by the Chairperson of the Social Service Program, Dr. A.A. Anom Wiradana, Sp.B, who expressed his hope that this activity could bring real benefits to the people of Tumbu Village.
"This social service is not just ceremonial, but a tangible manifestation of the concern of the Surgical Specialist Study Program and Prof. Ngoerah Hospital for the people of Bali, especially in areas that require additional health support. Hopefully this activity can have a positive impact in improving the quality of life of the community," said Dr. Anom.
The next speech was delivered by the Head of Tumbu Village, I Nyoman Pasek, who expressed his gratitude for choosing Tumbu Village as the location of the activity.
Followed by remarks from the Head of Department of Surgical Science SMF Surgical Science Faculty of Medicine Udayana University, dr. I Made Darmajaya, Sp.B, Sp.BA, Subsp.D.A.(K), MARS, who emphasized the importance of synergy between educational institutions and health services.
In this social service activity, the people of Tumbu Village received various free health check-up services, including vital signs screening such as blood pressure, pulse, breathing rate, oxygen saturation, general physical examination, and blood sugar level check.
Not only health checks, this activity was also filled with counseling on colorectal cancer, breast cancer and varicose veins. The counseling was given by specialist doctors who provided education on risk factors, early detection, and simple management that can be done by the community to prevent and manage both conditions. As a form of advanced service, ultrasound examination and evaluation of varicose veins were also carried out by an experienced medical team. Breast ultrasound examination was directly supported by the Radiology team of RSUP Prof. dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah, with the presence of dr. Putu Utami Dewi, Sp.Rad and dr. Faradilla Novita A, Sp.Rad. Vascular ultrasound examination for varicose veins detection was performed by vascular surgery division staff namely dr. Ida Bagus Budiarta, Sp.B, Subsp.BVE (K) and dr. Gusti Agung Bagus Krisna Wibawa, SpB, Subsp. BVE (K). This ultrasound examination provides an opportunity for the community to get a more comprehensive diagnostic assessment, in order to get the right management.
The community was very enthusiastic in participating in the entire series of events, including question and answer sessions and direct consultation with specialists. This activity received a warm welcome and is expected to be the forerunner of similar activities that are routinely carried out in various regions in Bali. Through this activity, the Udayana University Faculty of Medicine Surgical Specialist Study Program reaffirms its commitment to carry out the Tri Dharma of Higher Education to support overall public health, not only in hospitals, but also reaching out to local communities through community service activities.
