Fostering Early Literacy: Psychiatry Program at Udayana University Faculty of Medicine Holds Seminar on Gadget Addiction Impacts Among Adolescents

The Psychiatry Specialist Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, in collaboration with the Suryani Institute for Mental Health, organized a mental health education session for students from Albanna Junior High School (SMP Albanna) Denpasar. The event took place at the Dr. A. A. Made Djelantik Meeting Room, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

The activity aimed to improve mental health literacy starting from adolescence and to equip students with the ability to recognize various issues relevant to their daily lives.

Attendees included Prof. Dr. dr. Cokorda Bagus Jaya Lesmana, Sp.KJ(K), MARS, Coordinator of the Psychiatry Specialist Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University; Sariwati, S.Pt., M.Pd, Principal of SMP Albanna Denpasar; and teachers from the school.

On this occasion, Prof. Dr. dr. Cokorda Bagus Jaya Lesmana emphasized the importance of building mental health literacy from a young age. This enables adolescents to recognize their own mental states, understand emotional changes, and know when and from whom to seek help. Schools, families, and social environments also play a crucial role in creating a safe space for adolescent growth and development.

The seminar series began with a presentation by Dr. Ayu Indra Rumpa titled "Mental Health in Adolescents." Students were encouraged to understand that mental health is not merely the absence of mental disorders, but also the ability to cope with daily stress, build healthy relationships, recognize emotions, and develop personal potential.

The second session, covering the topic of "Gadget Addiction," was presented by Dr. Komang Pande Pradana. In this session, students were encouraged to use technology more wisely by developing self-control and healthy usage boundaries, ensuring that gadgets do not interfere with study time, sleep, physical activity, or interactions with family and friends.

The session continued with a presentation by Dr. Anak Ayu Sri Wahyuni, Sp.K.J.(K), titled "Bullying and Its Impact on Mental Health." Students were introduced to various forms of bullying—ranging from physical, verbal, and social bullying to cyberbullying—and learned the importance of fostering a safe, respectful school environment that does not normalize bullying as a standard part of social interaction.

The activity was interactive, marked by the students' enthusiasm during the discussion session. Several students asked questions about whether comments regarding body shape or skin color could be classified as bullying, and how to distinguish between appropriate senior-junior dynamics and actual bullying behavior. The discussion emphasized the importance of understanding context, respecting others' boundaries, and cultivating empathy in social interactions.

Through this initiative, the Psychiatry Specialist Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (FK Unud), in collaboration with the Suryani Institute for Mental Health, hopes that students will become better equipped to recognize and maintain their mental health, use technology wisely, build healthy social relationships, and collectively create a safe, bullying-free school environment.
