Guest Lecture: Leadership and Nursing Care Management as a Nurse in Charge of Care (PPJA)

The Nursing Professional Education Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, held a guest lecture entitled "Leadership and Nursing Care Management as a Nurse in Charge of Care (PPJA)" to prepare students for professional practice as Nurse in Charge of Care (PPJA). On Thursday, July 16, 2026, the lecture took place in the Prof. Dr. I Goesti Ngoerah Gde Ngoerah Meeting Room, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University.

This event was attended by eighth-semester students of the Nursing Professional Education Study Program who will soon enter professional practice. This guest lecture is part of the Study Program's efforts to equip prospective professional nurses with the leadership competencies, managerial skills, and clinical decision-making skills essential for fulfilling their role as a Nurse in various healthcare settings.

The event was officially opened by Dr. Ns. I Kadek Eka Swedarma, S.Kep., M.Kes., in his remarks, stated that the transformation of healthcare services requires nursing graduates to possess not only superior clinical competencies but also the ability to lead teams, coordinate services, and ensure continuity of safe, effective, and patient-centered nursing care.

He emphasized that the role of the Nurse in Charge of Care (PPJA) is a crucial pillar in ensuring the quality of nursing services. Therefore, nursing students need to prepare themselves early to develop strong communication, leadership, interprofessional collaboration, and service management skills. He also encouraged all participants to take advantage of this valuable opportunity to actively discuss and gain practical experience from speakers who have worked as academics and nursing managers in teaching hospitals.

The speaker was Dr. Hanny Handiyani, S.Kp., M.Kep., a lecturer in the Department of Basic Nursing and Basic Nursing, Faculty of Nursing, University of Indonesia, and Nursing Manager at the University of Indonesia Teaching Hospital. In her presentation, she discussed various strategic aspects of nursing leadership, the functions and responsibilities of the PPJA (Nursing Care Assistant), nursing care management, team coordination, effective communication, clinical decision-making, and leadership challenges in navigating the dynamics of modern healthcare.

Through various case studies and practical experiences in teaching hospitals, participants gained insight into the implementation of adaptive leadership, patient-centered care, and the importance of nurses as leaders of change in improving quality and patient safety.

The event was interactive and enthusiastically attended by students. Participants took advantage of the discussion session to ask questions related to the implementation of the PPJA role during professional practice, leadership challenges in service units, and strategies for building effective collaboration within healthcare teams.
