HMIK FK Unud’s PPK Ormawa Initiative Establishes Kusamba as a Leading Maritime Village; Inaugurated by Klungkung Deputy Regent
The Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program (PPK Ormawa) of the Nursing Student Association (HMIK) at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (FK Unud)—through the "GARAM LAUT" initiative (Integrated Empowered Community Movement)—is driving the development of Kusamba Village into a leading maritime village. Guided by Dr. Ns. Ni Made Dian Sulistiowati, S.Kep., M.Kep., Sp.Kep.J., the program implements the *Segara Kerthi* philosophy through maritime safety and the Blue Economy. This achievement was marked by the official inauguration of the Leading Maritime Village status by the Deputy Regent of Klungkung, Tjokorda Gde Surya Putra, at the Kusamba Village Office, Dawan District, Klungkung Regency, on Friday (September 4, 2026).
Attendees included the Head of the Klungkung Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) I Putu Widiada, Dawan District Head I Dewa Gede Widiantara, the Kusamba Village Head, the Head of the Maritime Village Institution, the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Planning at FK Unud Prof. dr. I Md. Ady Wirawan, M.P.H., Ph.D., the Coordinator of the Undergraduate Nursing Study Program Dr. Ns. Ni Ketut Guru Prapti, MNS., lecturers from the Undergraduate Nursing Study Program, as well as HMIK FK Unud members and the Kusamba community.
Kusamba is a coastal area with significant potential in the fisheries and marine product processing sectors. Preliminary mapping by the PPK Ormawa team revealed that 187 households rely on fishing and marine product processing for their livelihoods. However, this potential faces challenges regarding product development and marketing, waste management, and community safety during coastal activities. These conditions formed the basis for developing the GARAM LAUT program, which integrates economic, environmental, health, and safety aspects through the Blue Economy approach and the local wisdom of *Segara Kerthi*. Through this program, the community receives guidance on fishery product development, packaging, and marketing; the processing of liquid waste into Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC); and education on environmental awareness and safety, specifically regarding Occupational Health and Safety (K3) and Basic Life Support (BHD).
This series of support activities aims for long-term sustainability by strengthening the "Superior Maritime Village" (*Desa Maritim Unggul*) institutional framework. This framework is supported by community groups focused on waste processing, salt production, and disaster response, all expected to continue developing the village's economic, environmental, and coastal safety potential sustainably.
Klungkung Deputy Regent Tjokorda Gde Surya Putra commended the students' involvement in assisting the community of Kusamba Village.
"Kusamba Village possesses immense potential in terms of attractions and maritime resources. The presence of these students through the PPK Ormawa program is crucial in assisting the community to optimize that potential," said Deputy Regent Tjok Surya.
The inauguration of the Superior Maritime Village serves as a pivotal moment to reinforce the sustainability of the GARAM LAUT program's outcomes. The GARAM LAUT Superior Maritime Village institution—established via a Village Decree—is expected to provide a platform for the community to continue the program and act as the primary drivers in developing Kusamba Village's maritime potential.
The GARAM LAUT program also represents a contribution by students from the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (FK Unud), toward achieving the university's Key Performance Indicators (IKU) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
Through the collaboration between students, FK Unud, the village government, and the community, the HMIK FK Unud PPK Ormawa program is expected to deliver a lasting impact, helping to transform Kusamba Village into a self-reliant, safe, productive, and sustainable Superior Maritime Village.
