Preventing Learning Barriers in Children: Udayana University Faculty of Medicine’s ENT-HNS Department Conducts SCREEN-H Hearing Screening at SD Negeri 27 Pemecutan
As part of the "Udayana Mengabdi" (Udayana Serves) program, the Ear, Nose, and Throat – Head and Neck Surgery (ENT-HNS) Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, organized a community service initiative titled "SCREEN-H Method Hearing Screening Movement in Elementary Schools: An Effort to Prevent Learning Barriers in Children." The event took place on Friday, September 4, 2026, at SD Negeri 27 Pemecutan.
This activity represents a contribution by the Udayana University Faculty of Medicine toward raising public awareness—particularly within the elementary school environment—regarding the importance of maintaining ear health and the early detection of hearing impairment in children. Undetected hearing impairment can negatively impact a child's communication skills, concentration, overall development, and academic learning process.
The event was officially opened by the Principal of SD Negeri 27 Pemecutan, Dra. Yamtinah, M.Pd. In her remarks, she expressed appreciation for the "Udayana Mengabdi" program, which provides direct education and health services to students, thereby supporting children's health and academic success.
The program began with an educational session on ear health and hearing, delivered by dr. I Ketut Suanda, Sp.T.H.T.B.K.L, Subsp.Onk (K), FICS. During this session, participants learned about ear anatomy and function, the importance of maintaining auditory health, the causes of hearing impairment in children, and the impact of hearing loss on development and academic achievement.
In addition to the educational session, participants received ear health pamphlets—informational resources that students, teachers, and parents can use to adopt habits that promote hearing health in their daily lives. As an early detection measure, the implementation team conducted hearing screenings for students at SD Negeri 27 Pemecutan using the SCREEN-H application. The SCREEN-H method serves as a simple screening approach to help identify potential hearing impairments in children, enabling early evaluation and follow-up should any abnormalities be detected.
The activity also included educational sessions and ear cleaning services (BBT) to raise student awareness regarding the importance of maintaining ear hygiene in a proper and safe manner. Through this initiative, students gained an understanding of correct ear care habits and the risks associated with practices that could harm ear health.
Carried out as part of the "Udayana Mengabdi" (Udayana Serves) program by the Ear, Nose, and Throat–Head and Neck Surgery Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, this activity aims to foster greater awareness of hearing health within the school community. It also serves as a preventive measure against learning difficulties caused by undetected hearing impairments.
This community service activity represents a tangible commitment by Udayana University to fulfilling the role of higher education institutions through community-based health services, particularly in supporting children's healthy and optimal growth and development.
