In commemoration of World Mental Health Day, the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, held a community service event titled "Mental Health First Aid in Mass Casualty Incidents: From Reaction to Resilience in Disaster and Emergency Situations." The event took place on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at SD Negeri 12 Pemecutan, Denpasar, one of the flood-affected areas.
The event began with remarks from the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences, Prof. Dr. dr. I Made Jawi, M.Kes., and continued with remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. dr. I Gede Eka Wiratnaya, Sp.OT. Subs. Onk. Ort. R(K), who officially opened the event. The event was also attended by the Director of Wangaya Regional Hospital, Dr. Anak Agung Made Widiasa, Sp.A, MARS, MHKes.
In his remarks, Prof. Jawi stated that 38 students from the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, were present. In addition to providing education, they also provided health services in the form of examinations and treatment in collaboration with Wangaya Regional Hospital.
Meanwhile, Prof. Eka, in her remarks, stated that the disaster experienced by our brothers and sisters in Bali is felt by all of us, including the academic community at Udayana University. Therefore, let us work together to help the flood-affected community overcome Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) caused by the floods.
As a concrete implementation of the Tridharma of Higher Education, this activity aims to raise public awareness of the importance of mental health in dealing with disasters, particularly regarding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in flood victims.
The series of activities included mental health counseling, post-traumatic stress disorder screening, and an interactive discussion featuring two psychiatrists, also students in the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences at Udayana University, as well as several other related specialists. regarding initial management of mental health issues in emergencies.
In addition to health education, food packages were also distributed to flood-affected residents as a manifestation of the social responsibility of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University academic community. This activity involved lecturers, students of the Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program, the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, healthcare workers, and the local community.
Through this community service, it is hoped that disaster-affected communities will gain a better understanding and support in maintaining their mental health and building psychological resilience to face future challenges.
