Aerobic capacity and recovery speed are crucial components supporting sprinter performance, yet they receive little attention. Coaches tend to focus solely on anaerobic capacity, such as maximal speed and explosive power. Developing an integrated training program that develops aerobic, anaerobic, and recovery speed is crucial for junior sprinters to achieve long-term performance. This study aimed to determine the effect of high-intensity mixed interval training on improving aerobic capacity, recovery speed, and repeated sprint ability in junior sprint athletes in Denpasar City.
This study used a randomized pre- and post-test control group design. Thirty junior sprint athletes participated in the sample: 15 participants in the treatment group received high-intensity mixed interval training, and 15 participants in the control group received conventional training. The treatment was administered over 18 training sessions, three times per week, lasting 60-80 minutes per session. The instrument used in this study was the Multistage Fitness Test (MFT) to measure VO2 max capacity. Recovery speed was determined by heart rate at 5 minutes of recovery (HRR5) measured using a Polar H10 chest strap, and repeated sprint ability (RSA) was measured using the Running-based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST). Data were analyzed using the independent t-test and the Mann-Whitney test at a significance level of α = 0.05.
The results showed an average increase in VO2 max of 3.4 ml/kg/min (7.6%), an average increase in HRR5 of 4.5 beats (6.7%), and an increase in repeated sprinting ability of 35.2 Watts (10.2%) in the treatment group given high-intensity mixed interval training. Hypothesis testing showed a superior effect of high-intensity mixed interval training compared to the control group on VO2 max (p-value 0.041) and RSA (p-value 0.000). There was no difference in HRR5 between the treatment and control groups (p-value 0.430). It can be concluded that high-intensity mixed interval training improves aerobic capacity, recovery speed, and repeated sprinting ability in junior sprint athletes in Denpasar City.
