Bridging Laboratory Research and Health Policy: Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program at FK Unud Hosts Guest Lecture with UGM Expert
The Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (FK Unud), successfully organized a guest lecture titled "From Discovery to Better Health: Translating Research into Clinical Practice and Health Policy." This academic event took place at the Prof. Dr. I Goesti Ngoerah Gde Ngoerah Meeting Room, FK Unud Building, Denpasar, on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
The event aimed to enhance the understanding among students and academics regarding the concepts, challenges, and strategies involved in translating biomedical research findings into clinical practice and health policy. Furthermore, the event sought to facilitate substantive scholarly discussion between the expert speaker and students, while also strengthening academic networks and collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, and other higher education partner institutions.
The guest lecture featured a nationally renowned expert, Prof. dr. Jarir At Thobari, D.Pharm., Ph.D., from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta, as the keynote speaker. The interactive discussion session was moderated by dr. I Wayan Sumardika, S.Ked., M.Med.Ed., Ph.D.
The event was officially opened by the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Planning—who also serves as the Acting Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Information at FK Unud—Prof. dr. I Made Ady Wirawan, S.Ked., M.P.H., Ph.D., following a report from the Coordinator of the Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program, Prof. Dr. dr. Desak Made Wihandani, M.Kes.
In her remarks, Prof. Desak Wihandani extended a warm welcome to the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, and expressed her deepest gratitude to Prof. dr. ...Jarir At Thobari, D.Pharm., Ph.D., who took the time out of his extremely busy schedule to present at today's guest lecture. This topic is crucial in the current era, especially given that the audience comprises a mix of researchers and research-oriented clinicians. Hopefully, the insights shared by Prof. Jarir today will provide new perspectives—whether for students of the Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (FK Unud), as they define or deepen their research topics, or for fellow lecturers and researchers.
She added that this guest lecture is a regular event for the Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program, held twice a year.
"We sincerely hope that this partnership does not end here but continues into future academic activities and research collaborations. This guest lecture was attended by approximately 60 to 70 participants. Thank you to everyone who attended. May today's event benefit us all and foster the advancement of the Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program at FK Unud," concluded Prof. Desak.
Meanwhile, Prof. Ady Wirawan noted that this guest lecture is a regular event that plays a very positive role in building an academic atmosphere. He suggested that similar activities should be held more frequently, given that FK Unud oversees 38 study programs, including the Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program. The attending students come from diverse backgrounds, ranging from clinicians and practitioners to researchers.
"We truly hope Prof. Jarir can share insights and experiences regarding research management—specifically, how to translate laboratory research into clinical practice and public policy. Beyond inspiration, we also hope Prof. Jarir can bring opportunities for research cooperation or offer collaborations to students of the Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program, particularly the new cohort. Regarding grant projects that have been secured, it would certainly be excellent if students from the FK Unud Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program could be involved," explained Prof. Ady. "We hope that the experiences shared during today's guest lecture will motivate students—whether they pursue careers as academics or clinicians—to keep their research spirit and curiosity alive. I encourage all participants to engage actively in discussions and ask questions. The more questions and challenges posed, the more knowledge and insights we can glean from our speaker regarding grant success and the management of clinical trials—particularly those involving new vaccines and drugs," added Prof. Ady.
The event was attended by representatives from the Faculty of Medicine at Dhyana Pura University, Warmadewa University, Bali International University, and Mahasaraswati University Denpasar, as well as students and faculty members from the Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (FK Unud).
