Capacity Building for the Tobacco Dangers Student Community, Udayana University Public Health Student Association

The Special Division of the Tobacco Dangers Student Community (DK KMPT), of the Public Health Student Association (HMKM), Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, held the 2026 DK KMPT Capacity Building event on April 26, 2026, at RKB 4.02, East Building, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University. The event, themed "Youth in Action, Future in Progress: Advancing Tobacco Control with DK KMPT," demonstrated the younger generation's commitment to curbing the negative impacts of tobacco.

This event aims to increase students' capacity to understand and respond to increasingly complex tobacco issues in Indonesia, encourage the adoption of a healthy, smoke-free lifestyle, and introduce DK KMPT as a platform for personal development in health education and advocacy. Through this activity, it is hoped that students will become active agents of change in healthy living campaigns and contribute to tobacco control efforts in the community.

The 2026 KMPT Council Capacity Building featured expert speakers in their fields: Dr. Putu Ayu Swandewi Astuti, S.Ked., MPH., Ph.D., an expert lecturer in tobacco harm control; the Head of KMPT Council, Ni Kadek Risna Martadewi; and representatives from Girls Action Indonesia, moderated by Dewa Made Rai Pranata.

In her presentation, Dr. Putu Ayu Swandewi Astuti provided a comprehensive overview of the tobacco situation in Indonesia, from the significant health and economic burdens caused by tobacco consumption to the cigarette industry's strategy of massively targeting young people through various media and marketing approaches. She also discussed the latest trends in tobacco and nicotine product use, which are growing among adolescents. The presentation also emphasized the important role of young people in tobacco control efforts, through awareness-raising, empowerment, and advocacy for policies that support public health.

This activity was attended by students from the 2025 Undergraduate Public Health Study Program. The series of events began with a pre-test to gauge participants' initial understanding, followed by a presentation session and a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), which provided participants with the opportunity to analyze case studies related to the smoking problem in Indonesia and discuss possible solutions. The activity concluded with a post-test to evaluate participants' knowledge.

Through this activity, it is hoped that students will not only understand the dangers of tobacco but also be able to think critically, play an active role, and contribute to supporting tobacco control efforts in Indonesia.
