Discussion on the Role of Community-Based Mental Health Programs in Mental Well-Being in Bali
The Psychiatry Specialist Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, welcomed students from the Faculty of Psychology of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya (UKWMS) on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, in the Prof. Dr. I Goesti Ngoerah Gde Ngoerah Room, Faculty of Medicine Building, Udayana University, Denpasar. The visit was titled "Discussion on the Role of Community-Based Mental Health Programs in Mental Well-Being in Bali." (October 28, 2025)
The event was officially opened by Prof. Dr. I Md. Ady Wirawan, S.Ked., MPH., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Academic and Planning Affairs, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University. He expressed his deepest appreciation for the initiative, as it represents a crucial opportunity to strengthen academic ties between the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, and the Faculty of Psychology, UKWMS. He also opened up opportunities for future collaboration in education, research, and community service, particularly in enhancing our shared role in the field of mental health.
The series of events was also attended by Agustina Engry, M.Psi., Psychologist, Vice Dean II of the Faculty of Psychology, Widya Mandala Catholic University, Surabaya; Happy Cahaya Mulya, M.Psi., Psychologist, Head of the UKWMS Undergraduate Psychology Study Program; Dr. Luh Nyoman Alit Aryani, Sp.KJ, Subsp.Ad.(K), Coordinator of the Psychiatry Specialist Study Program, Udayana University Faculty of Medicine; Prof. Dr. Luh Ketut Suryani, Sp.KJ (K), Director of the Suryani Institute for Mental Health; and Prof. Dr. Cokorda Bagus Jaya Lesmana, dr., Sp.K.J., Subsp.K.(K), MARS, Professor of the Psychiatry Specialist Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, and the entire Suryani Institute for Mental Health team.
This event provided information on the Suryani Institute Overview, presented by Agung Ngurah Wisnu Wardana, S.Kom, HRD of the Suryani Institute for Mental Health. The event also featured a presentation by Prof. Dr. Cokorda Bagus Jaya Lesmana, dr., Sp.K.J., Subsp.K.(K), MARS, on the Community-Based Mental Health Program. This session continued with a question-and-answer session, discussion, and meditation. The presentation highlighted the work the Suryani Institute for Mental Health has done in collaboration with the Psychiatry Specialist Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, in addressing mental disorders in Bali Province. It also introduced the transformation of psychiatric services and treatment, including education and healthcare, which can synergize effectively.
Through this activity, it is hoped that the Psychology students who attend will be able to understand that there is a greater spirit to handle mental health, where according to the quote from Prof. Dr. dr. Luh Ketut Suryani, Sp.KJ (K) that "Life is a Challenge, Life is a Struggle, Life is Beautiful, what is impossible can become possible if God wills it." In this way, in the future, it is hoped that more hands will be willing to be extended to play a role in handling mental disorders in society and amidst the many stigmas and conflicts regarding mental disorders.
