Dr. Ari Andayani, Sp.M(K) Receives Doctoral Degree for Researching the Potential of Purple Sweet Potato Tubers Extract in Reducing Retinal Damage Due to High Blood Sugar Levels

Tuesday, January 25, 2022.

A hybrid Doctoral Promotion was conducted on behalf of dr. Ari Andayani, Sp.M(K) with the dissertation title "The Effect of Giving Purple Sweet Potato Extract Compared to Blueberries on Retinal VEGF mRNA Expression, Retina COX-2 Expression, and Blood Glutathione Levels in Hyperglycemic Model Mice" at Prof.dr. I Goesti Ngoerah Gde Ngoerah.

Long-term hyperglycemia can harm the retina as well as other parts of the eye. Hyperglycemia can harm the retina's microvascular system by causing an increase in angiogenesis factors, inflammation, and oxidative stress. The goal of this study is to see how purple sweet potato tuber extract compares to blueberries in terms of angiogenesis, inflammation, and oxidative stress in hyperglycemic rats.

The study's unique feature is that it directly examines the role of purple sweet potato tubers and blueberries in reducing oxidative stress, inflammatory factors, and angiogenesis factors in hyperglycemic circumstances. According to this study, purple sweet potato tubers have the same anti-oxidant properties as blueberries and can help to reduce inflammation. Purple sweet potato tubers can be used to substitute blueberries, which are more difficult to obtain and more expensive, because purple sweet potato tubers are easier to produce and cheaper in Indonesia, particularly in Bali.

This study shows that giving purple sweet potato tubers to hyperglycemic mice reduces inflammation, angiogenesis, and oxidative stress by raising glutathione levels and reducing COX-2 levels. In terms of raising glutathione levels and lowering COX-2 expression, purple sweet potato tubers had the same effect as blueberry extract.
