Symposium "Toxic Optic Neuropathy: Why Alcohol Intoxication Can Threaten Vision"
The Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, held a scientific symposium titled "Toxic Optic Neuropathy: Why Alcohol Intoxication Can Threaten Vision" as part of the 64th anniversary celebrations of the Family Council of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (BKFK-64) on Saturday, February 21, 2026. This event was held in a hybrid format, with the main venue being the A.A. Djelantik Room, Fourth Floor, Faculty of Medicine Building, Udayana University, Denpasar Campus.
This symposium was open to medical students and medical personnel and aimed to increase understanding of toxic optic neuropathy as a serious condition that can threaten vision, particularly due to alcohol intoxication and exposure to other toxic substances.
The topics discussed included the susceptibility of the optic nerve to metabolic disorders, the epidemiology and urgency of toxic optic neuropathy, pathophysiology and clinical diagnosis, various case reports, and the role of hemodialysis in methanol poisoning. Furthermore, a discussion was held on the importance of raising awareness among young people about the risks of excessive alcohol consumption and its impact on health, particularly vision.
The event was opened by the Vice Dean for Academic and Planning at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Made Ady Wirawan, MPH., Ph.D., and featured speakers with expertise in ophthalmology and internal medicine. The event was moderated by an experienced moderator, ensuring an interactive and scientific discussion.
This symposium is expected to provide participants with comprehensive insights and heighten clinical awareness of toxic optic neuropathy in medical practice.
