Digital Literacy Training Regarding Hoaxes through the Tular Nalar 3.0 National School Program

The Indonesian Youth Council for Tactical Changes (IYCTC) in collaboration with the Indonesian Public Health Student Senate Association (ISMKMI) of the Bali Region and the Undergraduate Public Health Study Program of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (PSSKM FK Unud), Saturday, September 21, 2024, held a Tular Nalar 3.0 national school class, a digital literacy training initiated by the Indonesian Anti-Slander Society (MAFINDO) together with Love Frankie and supported by Google.org. This event took place in the East Building of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University and was attended by around 87 young people from Denpasar City aged 18-24 years.

Tular Nalar is a learning program that aims to help the public recognize hoaxes through media literacy and critical thinking. This program has now developed into Tular Nalar 3.0, which focuses on reaching young people who are potential first-time voters or known as 'First Time Voters' through 500 classes spread across 38 provinces. This year, including Denpasar City as the third city after Jambi City and Medan City in July and August. This program takes place before the election, both the Presidential Election in February 2024 and the Regional Election in November 2024.

Ni Made Shellasih, IYCTC Program Manager, stated that this year IYCTC had the opportunity to become one of Mafindo's collaborators in implementing Tular Nalar 3.0. "As a forum that brings together a coalition of young people, this national school strongly supports our goal of inviting the younger generation to participate inclusively and significantly, and equipping them with critical thinking skills as first-time voters, especially ahead of the 2024 Pilkada," said Ni Made.

IYCTC has faced various dangerous hoaxes related to health issues, including misleading information about cigarettes. "As one of the best practices that has been carried out to combat hoaxes in the issue of controlling cigarette consumption, we disseminate information about myths and facts through the pilihantanpabeban.id website and our social media accounts, so that the public can understand the truth about the dangers of cigarettes in order to protect the surrounding environment, now and in the future," added Ni Made.

Therefore, this event is very much in line with the vision and mission of IYCTC, in collaboration with the ISMKMI Bali region, providing an opportunity for IYCTC members to improve their abilities including in sensing hoaxes to verifying information and facing the challenges of the digital era. They are also given an understanding of the fact-checking tools themselves.

Adib Zaki Prasetya, ISMKMI Region 3 Coordinator, who is also one of the event implementers, also provided a complete explanation regarding the technical aspects of today's event. "As facilitators, we have attended a series of trainings and received comprehensively prepared material modules, which we then distributed to participants. Participants were divided into 10 groups, where each group was accompanied by a facilitator who played an active role in facilitating the discussion. The learning method we use is interactive, making it easier for participants to understand the material on how to prevent the spread of hoaxes, especially those related to this year's Pilkada. In addition, to measure the effectiveness of the program, we also conducted pre-tests and post-tests to evaluate the increase in participants' understanding before and after the training," explained Adib

"In the digital era like today, approaching the 2024 Pilkada, the spread of hoaxes and misinformation is increasingly rampant. Through the Tular Nalar 3.0 National School, it is hoped that participants will be able to improve their critical thinking skills in sorting information, so that they can play an active role in countering misinformation. This program does not stop here; We will continue to provide assistance to the participants in the next few months to ensure that they remain consistent in becoming strong digital literacy agents," concluded Ni Made Shellasih.
