Proving the Connection between Human Health, Animal Health, and Environmental Health in Combating Coral Ascaris Agustina Wins Doctor of Medicine Degree

Located in the graduate courtroom lt. III, Denpasar Postgraduate Building, the Doctoral Promotion exam has taken place with the promovendus candidate, drh. Kadek Karang Agustina, SKH., MP., with the dissertation title "Epidemiological Study of Ascaris suum Worm Infection in Traditional Pig Farming Centers in Bali." (16/6/2023)

Ascaris suum is a zoonotic disease, but little research has been done on it. Pigs are a source of A. suum infection in humans. Traditional husbandry patterns, the application of personal hygiene and environmental sanitation will have an impact on the chances of zoonoses occurring in humans. The aim of this study was to identify A. suum as the cause of infection in traditional pig farmers, and to determine the risk factors that influence its infection.

This study was conducted in two stages, namely a cross-sectional study and continued with nested case control. A total of 495 stool samples from traditional pig farmers were examined microscopically and the positive samples were followed by molecular testing to identify A. suum. All respondents who were diagnosed with A. suum infection were then assigned to the case group in a case control study, while the random controls came from respondents who tested negative for A. suum infection. Comparison of the number of cases and controls is 1:4. The univariate test was carried out at the cross-sectional and multivariate stages of the study to determine the risk factors for infection in a case-control study.

The implications of the results of this study are the proven A. suum worm infects traditional pig farmers and risk factors, namely personal hygiene and ownership of pigs infected with A. suum as the main factors that influence A. suum infection in pig farmers in traditional pig farming centers in Bali. Thus, efforts to control ascariasis in humans must also pay attention to the health of pigs, which is one source of infection. Treatment of worms is not only carried out in humans but also in pigs, as well as the need to protect the environment from contamination of pig feces which is a source of A. suum infection. In this case the application of the concept of One Health is very important to realize health as a whole, handling must be carried out jointly, namely in humans, animals and the environment.
